Deb Nolan’s research interests include the empirical process, high-dimensional modeling, and, most recently, technology in education and reproducible research. She has been recognized at Berkeley for excellence in teaching and advising and enjoys working with and encouraging all students in their understanding of statistics. Deb is co-author of Stat Labs with Terry Speed, Teaching Statistics with Andrew Gelman, and XML and Web Technologies for Data Sciences with Duncan Temple Lang.
Professor Johnson’s research can be broadly categorized as materials characterization at the intersection of mechanical engineering and materials science. The thrust of his effort is to understand macroscopic material behavior in terms of its microstructure and to develop material models that accurately capture the response of a wide range of materials. His recent work falls into four areas: 1) microscopic modeling of failure modes in brittle materials, 2) understanding the failure of materials under impact loading, 3) developing macroscopic material models for the large-deformation response of metals, and 4) application of X-ray tomography with micron-level resolution to visualize the growth of damage in structural materials. Professor Johnson is also currently the chair of the Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools (BOARS), a committee of the system-wide Academic Senate for the University of California.
Elisa Stone teaches in the CalTeach program, and enjoys talking about K–12 teaching as a career. A former high school biology teacher and molecular and cell biology researcher, she continues to be interested in student development of scientific experimental skills. She has an MA in education, a PhD in genetics, and a single-subject teaching credential in biology.
With offering over ten years of rich experience in program development, building culture and climate, and specializing in providing support services at the High School level. Geral Lowe is excited to join the CalTeach team this year as the Student Services Coordinator! He is a Bay Area native who is adamant about serving and empowering students to strive for success in whatever endeavors they embark upon, and looks forward to continuing his mission-critical work at UC Berkeley.

Mark Spencer has his Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from UC Berkeley’s Environmental Science Policy and Management program and is passionate about working with students in the Cal Teach program. He deeply appreciates their rigor and STEM content expertise and the motivation that they bring to the work of developing their teaching practice.
Marlo Warburton has been a passionate K–12 teacher for over 20 years. National Board Certified in Early Adolescent Mathematics, she finds ongoing inspiration in her work related to positive classroom culture, growth mindset coaching, and the achievement of equitable outcomes for all students. Marlo has a BA in Sociology from UC Berkeley and an MA in Teaching from Mills College, and is a recipient of the 5-year Math for America Master Teacher Fellowship at UC Berkeley.
Jonathan is passionate about preparing a new generation of educators to embrace justice-centered teaching practices as a means to bring about social change. He has been a math teacher and high school co-principal, taught aspiring teachers at the university level, and is active as a parent organizer. Jonathan also works at the Oakland Public Education Fund, establishing partnerships and securing resources for Oakland public schools
Maria Laws is an enthusiastic K -12 science educator with over 20 years of classroom experience. She is a member of the SCOPE/CTA Instructional Leadership Corps and a recipient of the Math for America Master Teacher Fellowship at UC Berkeley. In addition to her work with high school students, she is a senior faculty member for the ACOE Integrated Learning Specialist professional development program serving educators across the Bay Area. Maria has a B. S. in Biological Sciences, an M. A. in Education, Teacher Leadership, and an M. Ed. in Education, Integrated Learning through the Arts.
Dan is a CalTeach instructor and math instructional coach in Oakland. He taught middle school math and science in the New York City Department of Education and his areas of focus include using language to promote conceptual understanding in the math classroom. His MA is in bilingual/bicultural education from Teachers College and his BA is in economics from Williams College. Dan enjoys hiking and biking, even in the rain.
Libby is a Research Scientist and Lecturer in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research examines how innovative learning technologies can capture student ideas and help teachers and principals use those ideas to make decisions about classroom instruction.Libby designs and leads teacher and principal professional development by using student embedded assessment data to inform instructional customization and resource allocation. Prior to being a Research Scientist, Libby was a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley. She also taught preschool and elementary school in Oakland, California, and in Alessandria, Italy. Libby’s research is published in leading peer-reviewed journals including Science and Review of Educational Research.
Ari is part of a team at the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE) where he develops Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-designed curriculum and supports teachers through professional learning experiences. Through a partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District, he has co-developed a project-based, middle school science curriculum aligned to the (NGSS) that focuses on performance-based assessments. Alongside this work, Ari is part of the OpenSciEd initiative to help middle school science teachers nationwide as they engage learners with the three dimensions of NGSS using responsive and equitable storylines. Additionally, as a lecturer in the CalTeach program at UC Berkeley, I support undergraduate STEM students as they prepare for the rigors of classroom instruction.
Geoffrey is an educator and researcher with experience in secondary and higher education. His interests include communication and collaboration in mathematics education, the design and use of technology in education, research based intervention in public education, and critical approaches to financial literacy and cryptography in education. He received a PhD in Mathematics Education from University of Sussex; 4 years at UCL IOE in London as Lecturer in Mathematics Education; significant secondary teaching experience in SF Bay Area.
Karin is a CalTeach instructor and an elementary lead teacher. She has worked in both public and private schools for over 20 years. She has a deep commitment to STEAM education in the elementary classroom and finds inspiration in teaching and coaching the next generation of STEAM educators. Karin has a BA in elementary education and an MS in curriculum and instruction.
Jessica is a fourth year majoring in English and minoring in CalTeach. She is extremely passionate about education and hopes that learning about STEM teaching can widen her understanding of equitable education. She would like to teach middle school math or English. Outside of school, Jessica loves to bake, write, and sing (sometimes at the same time)!
Erika is a fourth year Astrophysics major who intends on pursuing her teaching credential through the CalTeach Program. She aspires to intern for NASA or ESA in her near future, and plans on becoming a high school physics teacher back home. Outside of school, she enjoys watching the latest movie releases, exploring nearby cities, and relaxing to music.
Nada is a third year student studying genetics and plant biology. She enjoys hiking and camping as well as reading science fiction. While she has yet to decide on a specific career path, she is a strong advocate of outdoor education and field work and hopes to be a part in making these experiences more common in schools. Her favorite plant is Equisetum arvense (field horsetail)!
Justin is a fifth-year Public Health Major and CalTeach Minor from Pico Rivera, CA. He is interested in community health, infectious diseases, and health/science education. In the future, he plans on becoming an educator or working in the public health field. He enjoys immersing himself in nature, listening to music, cooking, and taking naps when he can!
